Sophie Handford

Sophie Handford is an elected Councillor on the Kāpiti Coast District Council, holding the title of New Zealand's youngest Councillor. She attended Kāpiti College, an hour north of the capital city Wellington, and after graduating from this high school in 2018, went on to found and coordinate the School Strike 4 Climate movement in New Zealand. This movement grew from being Sophie and a few of her close friends, to 170,000 people on September 27th all standing united for climate justice. They are working to build momentum behind a vision of climate justice, bringing together youth, unions, families, workers, grandparents and all areas of the NZ community.

We acknowledge that the Centre for Urban Youth Research is located on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Algonquin-Anishnaabe peoples. As guests in this territory, we strive to work in collaboration and solidarity with the Algonquin peoples and other Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples on Turtle Island and globally to advance the recognition of truth and the fulfilment of (re)conciliation.
