Ilya Zrudlo

Ilya Zrudlo is an assistant professor in the Département d’éducation et pédagogie at l’Université du Québec à Montréal in Canada. He specializes in the educational foundations, particularly philosophy, but carries out interdisciplinary research. His first research program involves learning about the capacities young people need to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities, the arrangements that support such involvement, and the forces that impede their progress. Ilya has published on this theme in journals such as Education, Citizenship and Social Justice, the Journal of Moral Education, Studies in Philosophy and Education, and Educational Theory. His first book, Navigating the Moral Landscape of Youth Development and Community Education (2026), is the culmination of years of grassroots action and reflection. This academic work springs from his practical experience, in turn reinforcing it by clarifying understanding of relevant concepts, tracing the roots of curent thinking and sensibilities, and shedding light on various dimensions of the experience of young people.

Ilya’s second research program is focused on teacher education: the philosophy of teacher education, the role of philosophy in teacher education, and the critical analysis of teacher education discourse and practice. In this context, he has published in outlets such as Teaching and Teacher Education, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and the Canadian Journal of Education. He is currently writing a textbook for teachers.

We acknowledge that the Centre for Urban Youth Research is located on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Algonquin-Anishnaabe peoples. As guests in this territory, we strive to work in collaboration and solidarity with the Algonquin peoples and other Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples on Turtle Island and globally to advance the recognition of truth and the fulfilment of (re)conciliation.
